Wheelchair project

A member of the Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr Rotary Club, David Bathers, was working in Kazakhstan on behalf of BESO and visited the Almaty Rotary Club. He returned to Wales with a request for assistance in providing used wheelchairs and mobility aids. These are required for the  children who have been affected by the nuclear weapon tests, which were located in Kazakhstan.

After David's return to the UK, it was decided that we, as a club, would join this project and an article appeared in a local newspaper. As a result, we have received over 100 wheelchairs and other devices. Most of the chairs were in very good condition, and the rest have been professionally refurbished. They come from a variety of sources, from private homes, from commercial concerns and some from the health service. These latter ones have been withdrawn from service in the UK as a result of designs and specification changes within the NHS. In this venture, we have received generous sponsorship for the shipping, insurance, packaging and local transportation from BP Exploration, British Gas International, General Domestic Appliances (Hotpoint), Bryn Hedd Nursing Home and Llandudno Smokeries.
