Water and Sanitation Project

Clean water and sanitation issues are the focus of Rotary's attention. Worldwide, more than 800 million people do not have access to clean drinking water.

In 2010, the Rotary Club of Almaty decided to implement one of the six main areas of Rotary ministry, implementing the project "Water and Sanitation" in schools in the Almaty region, where this problem was frightening.

Local authorities of the Almaty region, at the request of the Rotary Club of Almaty, provided the addresses of five children's institutions where the situation with the provision of clean drinking water was the worst – primary schools in the villages of Kyzylzhar, Ungurtas, Besagash, Zhansugurova and Saryozek.

After calculating the budget and assessing the situation in Rotary schools, the Almaty Club decided to start with schools in the villages of Kyzylzhar, Ungurtas, Besagash and an orphanage under the leadership of priest Sophrony in the village of Tuyumebayev. The shelter includes an orphanage and a nursing home for the elderly.

At the charity event "James Bond Ball", organized and held by us in cooperation with the European Business Association of Kazakhstan in February 2011, we raised $ 20,000 for this project.

The project was completed within 4 months.

The total number of people in need who were helped by this project was more than 3,500 children!

  • Ungurtas - 292 children
  • Besagash - 1377 children
  • Kyzylzhar (Village Council) - 565 children
